Soft skill #1 DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Description/ Explanation: The soft skill of diversity gives each person a unique thinking style and work experience. People have different ideas and opinions and these are based off things such as age, ethnicity, and background. Inclusion is the ability to recognize and appreciate these unique differences, and ultimately create a welcoming environment. Diversity and Inclusion, when used together, bring understanding, awareness, acceptance, respect, appreciation, and values that allow people to work together more efficiently.

Current Rating/ My Goals: I would currently rate myself a 8/10 on diversity and inclusion. I admit that sometimes I view things too one sided, and don't always take other pople's ideas or opinions into account becasue they are different than mine. My goal is to be more open to different ideas on how to run or complete a task, these differing opinions are a good thing to have in a workplace. Everyone has their own ideas that they think are best based on their history. My goal is to become more accepting of these individuals own personal style and diverse experiences.

Steps to complete goal:

1. When others present a different viewpoint or idea ask to hear more about it

2. Have an open mind to everyone, and include everyone

3. Appreciate that others will have a different midset than my own

4. Hold them to the same standards as me, don't descriminate

Approaches to use: One approach that I could use is thinking about how I want others to treat me. I appreciate it when other people take my ideas into account, and I know others experience this same feeling. By reminding myself that all humans share emotions like happiness and sadness I can remind myself to be open and understanding. I will use this approach the next time someone suggests an idea that is different than mine.

This picture to the right shows the short assignment task that we were to complete at the end of the diversity and inclusion video session. For this assignment I had to match the first two instances to where they belonged on the arrows. For the third arrrow I had to share my own experience and illustrate where this instance would fall on the arrow. Look at the image to the right to see where I believed the first two instances belonged, and where I placed my own experience.

"Its not how you feel that determines how you act, its how you act that determines how you feel"

In a history class one time I worked with a random partner on a project. After working with him I learned to accept that he had differnt opinons than I did, and that it was OK!

Soft skill #2 POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Description/ Explanation: A positive attitude is all about how we think of ourselves, and how we interact with others. Positive people are resilient, even when they experience a set back they continue to work hard. Having a positive attitude is always having a positive outlook even when life isn't going the best. Positve people never let the negativity of others get in their way. Having a positive attitude makes for a fun, hard-working, and continually improving work environment.

Current rating/ My Goals: I would currently rate myself a 7/10 on positive attitude. Sometimes when things don't go my way I can be easy to get down about it becuase I am someone who always wants to do my very best. By looking at the positives, rather than the negatives I can train myself to be a more positive person that people enjoy being around! My goal is that whenever I am feeling down to think about all the great things in my life, this will allow me to take the glass half-full approach rather than the glass half-empty. This goal of mine will help in all areas of life, not just in the workplace, social ability and health will also benefit as I work to fulfill this goal of mine.

Steps to complete goal:

1. Breathe, do not forget to stay calm even when you feel agitated

2. Learn from my mistakes and work to make improvements for next time

3. Seek out and appreciate others with a positive attitude

4. Wake up each morning will the intent to be better than before

Approaches to use: One approach that I could use is thinking about all the positives that come out of having a positive attitude. When you think negative thoughts your health and mental status is decreased, whereas when you are thinking positive your energy and mental health is stimulated. I am always trying to better myself, and by reminding myself each day that being positive will allow me to better myself, I will have a greater motivation towards accomplsihing my goals.

This diagram to the right shows the short assignment that I was to complete after learning more about positive attitude and its importance. For this assignment I filled in the three categories with positive things in my life, negative things in my life, and goals for my future success. The purpose of this exercise was to show myself all the good things I have going for me. It was also meant to teach me that you are much more likely to accomplish your goals and recognize the positivity in your life if you write it down. Look at the diagram to see my answers!
