Woodwinds Hospital HealthEast Internship
Position: Welcome Center
Supervisor: Sheila Her
This past fall I began my service occupational internship at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury, MN. I chose this internship because I thought it would be a good way to learn more about the hospital setting and see if it was a place I would enjoy working at every day in the future. I also thought that volunteering so close to my home would be a good way to give back to my community, while still recieving educational benefits. I committed to volunteering two times per week, for 4 hour shifts. This gives me 8 volunteering hours at woodwinds each week. I pick up my additional hours for my internship class at another business related company in order to recieve full credit for my class.

Woodwinds has helped me enhance some of my common work skills such as communication, patience, listening, and hard-work. However, the most beneficial skills I have learned from my position is a better understanding of dedication and time-management. It took me months before I was fully trained in as a Welcome Center volunteer, and it was by no means an easy job. However, the personal reward I feel whenever I help a patient or visitor, is well worth the months of training I spent at Woodwinds.
I believe that my experience thus far at Woodwinds has contributed enormously to my plans for the future. Before working at Woodwinds I had no idea what a typical daily routine of a hospital member involved, but after volunteering in the hospital I understand each persons role and responsibility more clearly. I know that without one person completing their job, the entire hospital would have a hard time functioning. A major benefit of my position are the connections I have made and people I have met who share the same interests as I do. I hope to stay in touch with these people and build up my network of people in the medical field, as this will help me as I pursue a career in the future. Woodwinds has been one of the most positive, and impactful experiences I have ever had volunteering. I am thankful every time I think about the opportunites it has provided me with.
Above are some pictures of me at the welcome desk carrying out a few of my listed responsibilites.
